Now I know about the worms having no sense of smell and that's just fine and dandy by me, but having sneaked my way past all of the dogs in the game (with a lot of smelly beef jerky in my pocket, mind you) I can't help but wonder what happened to these dogs' noses in whatever disaster afflicted the mines?
I mean, seriously, they can be right next to me and so long as I hunker down and don't move they just wander on by? It was my limited understanding that hounds employ their sense of smell above or as much as others to detect prey? Sneaking past them in the fashion I was able to should probably be considered cheating!
Just my two cents.
Good observation, mabey things will be different in the next game. By the way their eyes glow the look like cyottes. Do cyottes have a good sence of smell?

I'm guessing they do. All canines and felines have extremely sensitive senses of smell, to my best knowledge. That their eyes glow may, however, also suggest that they are in some way mechanical, which would be quite intriguing... (well, I saw the sequel video and that was the impression I ended up getting)
I remember being CLOSE to those dogs a few times, i think even accidently hitting or knocking something down, and they didn't respond.
It would be better if they smell the player, that's true! And when they do that, they just slowly start walk to you.
It would be more scarier that they search you by the smell of the Beef Jerky and you than they straightly run and comes to eat you (if they don't see you).
That's my opinion.
lol
I originally pondered the same thoughts about the wolves not being able to smell the player.
I simply put it down to the fact that they're undead, and for whatever reason: they must have lost their sense of smell entirely.
It makes the experience believable to me at least,
: )
I thought they were wolves, by the howlings... but even if they were undead, as you can see they walk about, and they do it because they can see where they're going. That means they kept thei'r senses even though they died. So they should have the smell sense.
But that's great that they don't have it cause if they did we would be screwed. If you ever tried to run away from a raging dog you would know...

exactly ^
If they could smell, the player would be a dead man walking..... it'd be impossible to sneak by multiple wolves w/out detection.
It was a wise choice by the developers imo.
Well... unless you could get out of reach (ie. on top of a large box). then the wolves would smell around the box until they finaly assume you weren't there and give up and get back to the scripted patrol path or something...
Meaning, it could be done, but it'd have to be well though. But anyhow it would make the game somewhat dificult and/or interesting. And to sneak past dogs... you should count also on a better hearing sense than that of humans. Maybe we'll see that on later projects from FG. Who knows.
But in all the games I played that included dogs, hounds, hellhounds, wolves or dobermans none of them had the sense of smell (two of those games were Broken Sword III and Medal of Honor 2).
Everyone always seem to forget that the eyes are the leat evolved sense in canine species.
Well, it's kind of hard to simulate the smell of foods in a game ;-)
Plus, if they had the devs would have gotten bombarded with "OMG I CANT ESCAPE FROM DOGS" topics.
