I just finished the game about 20 minutes ago and I must say I haven't been shaken up by a game like that since... either Silent Hill or... Scratches.

I went through the game without a walkthrough (although, i accidentally read a bit re: near the end when i was about to show my friend the Wikipedia article on it, but it didnt ruin any of the effect on me) and had some complete 'DUH!' moments a few times

Spoiler below!
like finding the code to section C... it took a nights sleep and half a day to realize "Oh! the reason why the note is blank is because its written in invisible ink!" I felt stupid and smart at the same time... odd feeling really

I applaud you guys on the great puzzles you made! I really enjoyed just about all of them

The one I absolutely loathed was
Spoiler below!
the steam floor in the refinery

I died like 20 times trying to get passed that.

The monsters were great. Since i never saw the thread about the easier combat... I got used to sneaking and the suspense about getting caught never went away Big Grin.

I really liked the spiders too... especially the times when

Spoiler below!
you had to run through narrow, maze-like tunnels filled with eggs

Well, they kind of irritated me until i found out how to get passed them, but the chases kept me alert and scared Big Grin

The worm was cool too and I'm glad you used it sparingly, but i think it kinda lacked personality and forboding. With the dogs.. you could hear them growling and snarling and with the spiders... even with the eggs you could hear pulsating. The worm was scary the first time it popped out, but the 2nd time... meh... it was more frustrating than anything... it didnt even have the same feeling as the spider chases.

but something you did an AMAZING job with was

Spoiler below!
the entire character of Red. Especially the twist at the end... and the way you topped it off with a cherry by leaving the letter he wrote in the desk showing how old he was when he was trapped... wow.. that just added extra punch to the entire ordeal... I actually nearly cried. ('topped it off with a cherry'? I think i've been listening to Red too long lol)

I cannot wait to get Episode 2, I'll probably get it within the next few days if i can.

Some things that I thought frustrating (but you may have already done something about in the new game/with patch/etc) were:

The combat... but you fixed that already

it may have been a bug... but
Spoiler below!
a dog just appears out of nowhere in the back of the mine near the workshop after having secured the area once the fuse is made. Before going into the workshop I explored the corridors and there was no dog there beforehand, and i even blocked the door with a barrel.

there was no way to control the speed you moved aside from crouching. It was either a walk or a crawl. maybe add a way to run (at least for a short amount of time anyway).

I liked the tools being weapons, it fit the character well since he wasn't battle hardened or trained in combat in any way... don't change that Big Grin

This didn't really change the game for me, but you might want to vary the pattern of monster encounters... because i noticed halfway through that it went kind of like this:

Spoiler below!
dogs, spiders, dogs, worm, spiders, dogs, spiders, dogs, worm (ok, so at the halfway point i expected a worm soon after i realized the spider/dog pattern)

it might be different for people depending on the amount of backtracking done, but its there. It didn't change the game for me, because the chases were scarier than the 'jumping out' horror device which didn't happen much anyway (thankfully).

Overall, I very much liked the game. It was a bit slow at the beginning, but quickly picked up once the dogs were introduced. I liked the claustrophobic feeling it gave in the smaller tunnels and the ominous growling of the dogs, and the clues regarding the ordeal kept me wondering and wanting to know what was going on. The tremors added alot of extra tension as well.

Great Job! And I look forward to playing episode 2 Big Grin

P.S. Sorry if i used the spoiler tag when i shouldn't have... I just didnt want to take the chance of spoiling anything.

You can run if you press Shift button at the same time as you walk. Smile
