Hi all,
played Penumbra, loved it.
but since i played the tech deom first, i was expecting spooky concrete corridors but got a mine instead, and the enemies in the tech demo were far more interesting.
Don't get me wrong, still think overture is the best computer game ive ever played., but just wanna know how many ppl share my feelings bout this.
The tech demo was much, much better.
-Creative Puzzles
-Closed-in Feeling (no where to run)
-Uniquely tied levels (none of the crap in Overture or black plague)
-Some Jumper moments, which were rare in Overture/Black Plague
-Less violent and more survival with enemies
Overture and Black Plague were a letdown as I had been expecting a Tech Demo feel. =[ But oh well..
"Some Jumper moments, which were rare in Overture/Black Plague"
This is one thing that i agree very strong on, Overture and black plague had no jumper moments, that's what makes horror games scary. It's not enough with a scary athmosphere, you need to get that heart beat 500 times/sec.
The problem with overture and black plague is that they are too "realistic". It's scary yes, but it really really need some supernatural things in it.
Yeah, black plague had those infected guys, but they are not enough. Some real lovecraftian-like monster would have been much better.
Though the roach in the tech demo was a bit weak for me. I still can't get over that the hunter was never finished...
There was a few jumper moments in Overture/Black Plague.
Overture: Seeing the spider for first time;First worm
Black Plague:Seeing monster run past door in freezer;computer-room guy; walking past computer-room freezer (with him in it)
and the biggest being the corpse falling down in the dog-area.
Most modern games relay too heavily on Jumper-moments to scare the person, and they get old quickly. "Oh, I bet something will fly out of that vent. Yup, there it is."
Tech demo had alot (relative to how big the levels were); First roach moment, Vent suddenly coming off and strange sound coming from vent; Red-ish vision when walking down same corridor later on
Penumbra is more about making the player believe there will be a jumper soon, and it needs to do this from time to time.
well i disagree. I think overture is way better them the tech demo. THe only think i liked was the lights going off at the beginning. I think what makes overture less scary is the great amount of enemy's on the game has you will gwet used to them. But still overture is better them tech demo.
Most jumpers are too slow in my opinion, jumpers need to be there in ONE or less than a second. That will make the player jump. Having to wait while a corpse fly in the air in 3 seconds don't really count like a scare to me.
Or it surelly was a bug when that dead guy in the kennels flied like 3 seconds in the air.
I feel that Tech Demo was much more scarier than Overture. But Overture had something that Tech Demo didn't...

mmmm, i agree with you, the Red touch along with the tongules man and worm were what made overture a great game for me,
but the tech demo was pretty damn spooky in parts and was really quite interesting.
lol yeah, hmm, i don't remember the corpse in the dog area though, refresh my memory.
How Ironic.
Almost everyone likes Tech Demo mostly.
Why won't the devs continue it with a new story?

And with the most huge budget
