I just finished playing the game today, and let me say now that that is the first time I ever played a Survival Horror game without any guns. While it was an interesting and possibly even "Fun" experience, it's not one I care to repeat.
Walking in the dark, too afraid to turn a light on... listening to the creepy music and wondering if there's a vicious zombie dog around the next corner... getting eaten by giant worms five or six times in a row before learning how to escape... all kinds of really macabre, disturbing things...
I don't think I'll ever forget the sound of Red's screams. That marks the absolute most horrifying thing I've ever experienced in a game.
And all of this is stuff I felt while all the bright lights were on, the gamma was up, and the sound was turned low.
Congratulations, Frictional Games. You have made a game that may well give me nightmares. I'm never going into a dark area without a knife in my hand again...
That's what I call "great success"!
BTW: Does this mean you won't play Black Plague? :/

Probably.
lol, yeah, I hated it too, but I also loved it. I saw the GameTap trailer which made it look 'really' awsome, so I decied to play it. Once I started I really wanted to stop, but I couldn't cuz I just had to know what was going on down there...
I guess by playing this game I learned to like fear. I guess its just like feeling of releif you get right after you get attacked by a dog or escaped the worm chase.
I played the second game with my friends which made it less scarry and alot funner. You should try it.

Same here, after I played through the Tech-Demo (Which scared me to death), I was no longer afraid of horror games, just like that. It's kinda scary how fast I lost my fears for horror games.
Well, from playing a lot of other horror games, I must say that the Penumbra games are probably the most scary of them all, from my experience.

Penumbra is certainly one of the greatest Horror games in the world.
This game was just sucking me into it, getting me out of my ordinary life. I remember when I played first time, I always told myself to wait until the night when it darks and play it, but rarely did so.
All the day I was waiting eagrly to play Penumbra during the night...
This games just sucks you into your own fears, and it made me LOVE fear feelings too @_@
Well, one of the main ingredients for fear in Penumbra is that everything seems so real - just about everything you do is just what you would've done if you actually were in those situations. Most of the puzzles are pretty realistic, that way. And you're playing a pretty average guy, and his human characteristics draws out the same characteristics in yourself.
You both identify with the character, and with the things he does - most horror games does not include the latter, but Penumbra does, and that's one of the things that makes it so terrifyingly great!
All other effects is applied after that. If you'd take away that, then the other fear invoking effects wouldn't be much to fear at all.

how very true. no game is ever too serious and scary when you have friends, and you're all laughing about it.
