I am at the point where there are broken steam pipes. I place my pointer on the mattress and it makes a fist. I use the directional keys. I move away and the mattress stays where it is. Eventually the first changes back into a hand. I've tried pulling and pushing the mattress. I've tried grabbing the mattress in different places (only a couple small areas I can grab it) and moving it from different angles. I've tried moving the barrels out of the way so they won't interfer when I move the mattress. The barrels move easily. But when I go back to the mattress I get the same problem. It forms a hand but won't move when I use direction keys.
I had the same problem, but when I played a second time the mattress moved quite easily, I am guessing this is a glitch of some kind. If you don't want to start your game over then I will tell you that there are 2 other ways of getting past the steam, if you want me to tell you more specificly or give you more hints please reply saying so.
I appreciate the offer but I found an alternative route. Thanks for the advise though I was getting tired of trying to move the mattress.
I had the same glitch. The mattress had actually moved, but i could still see it there. That is, I moved the matress away from the vents. I could hear it sliding around as i moved it, but couldn't actually see it. It was like it was invisible. However, you can still turn the steam vent valves behind the mattress by placing the cursor at their approximate locations and turning them.
I was able to move the mattress the first time I tried, but died when I tried to use it to block the vents.
When I restarted the level, I found that although I was unable to move the mattress, I could crouch down and go thru it to move the three valves that are behind it. I guess the clipping for the mattress isn't working properly.

Same problem here...
I managed to get past by pushing the drums to block the steam.
I've had that too... restart the game did the trick for me... otherwise there is a tunnel too that can help...

This is because the madrass uses skinning. The problem is sloved now and should be a part of the upcoming patch :)
That is great part of the game. I didn't think about using the drums.
Nice to see that even though it is a "tech demo", there is still a patch coming for it.
maybe the monsters just filled the matress with cinder blocks to watch to try and move it then go insane and eat all the RATPOISON thats flooding the area:O
