If the Penumbra development team decide to contine development of the game it would be really scary if they have add a ghost as an aid to the player.I dont want the development team to make the ghost look like anything similar to the girl in the game F.E.A.R or the movie 'The Ring/2'.
Who?: the ghost can be anyone that use to work in the place. It could be the person that wrote the letter that is in the locker room in the entrance(the first letter you read).
When? the ghost should appear in dark corridoors.The ghost doest not walk, it teleports itself every 30 cms (eg you see it at the end of the corridoor and then it starts coming towards you. it disappears and then reappears, so when it reappears it has teleported itself 30 cm forward). Until it then comes right in front of the computer monitor and you can see its full face(the player cant not runaway or walk into another room since this is a cutscene). There should be a part in the game where the player has to figure out everything himself but them there should be a puzzle where its every hard and the ghost will help the player out.
The ghost could put in voices in the players head. Eg The player enters an entertainment room where there is a billards table and a couch(lots of blood and when entering a dead body could fall out). Then a conversation of a couple could play in the players head eg: "Betty ive been thinking of us and we've been going out for three years. I love you the moment i saw you and im soo glad that Jack put us on the same shift 3 years ago cause i got to know you more. Will you marry me?". "Danny of course i will" < this conversation should have some short echo effect. If there were more converation flashbacks like these it would show the player that this place had a history and that certain things were said in here. The flashback conversations could also give the player an idea of who the ghost really is.
There should also be more important conversations like of what they said when all hell broke loose: eg "Jack i blame you this is all your fault i told you we should have never opened the..." "Danny you know as well as i do that if we didnt, it would have unleashed itself into the outside world"(msytry and supsense for the player)
