You take the Cranky Old Man thing too seriously, you sound like an elitist, and that's just borderline insulting. Kids should be encouraged to make games, particularly mods, it doesn't matter if they aren't making the best games - just don't play them dude. No one makes a great game first time, everyone has to practice. Better they start younger and turn out better at it then many of the adults here of the same age, we all stand to gain when they eventually get good.
Quote: I can see your point here, but I
would disagree slightly with it. This is more of note, not a guide. I
use the words basis and guide as this is my opinion on what makes a good
story, but everyone is entitled to their own.
And as to backstory: Parts of it are, yes, but I always imagine
backstory to be discovered through gameplay so for me the lines blur.
Of course, I appreciate the discussion. Everything we discuss on this topic is subjective, and everyone has their own opinion. From your perspective, take what I say with a pinch of salt as I've only played a few hours of Amnesia, as I don't have a lot of interest for horror games. I look forward to reading the rest.
