1) Does my graphics card support the game?
The game uses OpenGL which is more rare especially at older or lower-end graphics cards like Intel ones for example. Basically, your graphics card needs to support OpenGL 2.1 or more. Anything below 2.1 will fail to work.
In order to know what OpenGL version your graphics card supports go to:
My Documents\Amnesia\Main (Windows XP)
Documents\Amnesia\Main (Windows Vista & 7)
and open the file HPL.log. Go to
Initializing Graphics Module section and check
Version. If it reports 2.1.0 or more then you should be able to run the game.
Notice 1: If it reports OpenGL 2.1.0 or more and the game still does not run then check
Renderer.
--> If it says Intel® 4 Series Express Chipset Family or Intel® G41 Express Chipset or Intel® G45/G43 Express Chipset or Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 4500M then due to bad Intel drivers and hardware limitations, your card does not support the game.
--> If it says:
then make sure you have the latest legacy catalyst driver installed and that the game is fully updated.
Notice 2: The above graphics cards are not supported by Frictional Games but they might work.
Notice 3: The game does not officially support Intel graphics cards since most of them use older versions of OpenGL 2.1. The only Intel cards that work are Intel Graphics Media Accelerator HD (first generation processors) Intel HD 2000/3000 (second generation processors) and Intel HD 2500/4000 (third generation processors) cards.
2) My graphics card is supported. How can I update my drivers?
If yours graphics card supports the game then you need to make sure that you have the latest drivers installed. First you need to know the manufacturer of your gpu. Do so by opening the HPL.log file again and checking
Renderer.
--> If it says Nvidia then go
HERE
--> If it says AMD or ATI then go
HERE (For legacy drivers check Question 1)
--> If it says Intel HD
then use the
Have Disk Method (Only HD cards supported, check Notice 3 at Question 1)
There, enter your computer details and download the latest drivers available. Some of them can be easily found at Start by typing dxdig (Windows Vista & 7) or at Start>run by typing dxdiag (Windows XP).
Notice 1: If you have a laptop with a dedicated AMD and an integrated Intel HD card then check
THIS TOPIC.
3) I was told/found that my graphics card drivers are corrupted and a clean installation is needed. Ho do I do that?
1) Download
Driver Sweeper v3.2.0 and install it. Do not run it yet.
2) Uninstall your graphics card drivers and all of their components.
3) Now run Driver Sweeper. Select
ONLY AMD, ATI, NVIDIA, PHYSX traces and delete all the results.
4) Reboot your system and then download the latest graphics card drivers for your system
(see Question 2)
5) After installation reboot your system again. Make sure that in device manager your card appears correctly and try launching the game again.
4) At HPL.log I see "ATTENTION: System does not support const arrays in glsl!". What does it mean?
Some older graphics card does not support this function but that does not mean the game cannot run. Make sure your drivers and the game is updated and don't bother for that warning.
5) At HPL.log I see "Renderer: GDI Generic and Version: 1.1.0" What does it mean?
This means that you have no graphics card drivers installed on your system or they are corrupted and cannot run properly with the operating system. Check Question 2 on how to update them and Question 3 on how to fix corrupted driver installations.
This can also mean that OpenGL uses an integrated card instead of your proper graphics card.
--> If you have a dedicated AMD and an integrated Intel HD card go to Question 2 Notice.
--> If you have a dedicated Nvidia and an integrated Intel HD card then enter the Nvidia Control Panel and set the Nvidia card as the preferred device to use.
Also, enter Display Properties and make sure that the desktop color depth is 32.
6) Nothing helps. I would like to start a new topic. What information do you need to help me?
If nothing of the above answers your questions and you need to open a new topic then you must answer in these questions when you first post it:
1. What operating system do you have? Also 32-bit or 64-bit?
2. Is it a laptop or a desktop?
3. Attach us, at your topic, the file HPL.log found under Documents\Amnesia\Main folder.
