Amnesia Doesnt let me press TAB or Escape

I looked through the forums but i could not find the problem.... when i run the game i can play it normally at the menu screen but when i go into single player i can hear daniel talking but the screen is blank, and when i go onto custom stories it works fine but when i either press TAB or ESC which are the main buttons it freezes completely but i can still hear the music playing i have the good graphics card too. please help
