HPL2 Editor Linux Issue

I have recently started using the Level Editor on my linux machine. After I select an object from the drop down menu (Static Objects, Entities, etc) I cannot see the object in the editor and the "Thumbnail" window on the right side is all black, instead of displaying the object i have selected.
I can only see the objects i have placed after I select them. And by "see" i mean that i can see the wire frames. The objects themselves are still invisible.

On a side note, when i try and use ALT + Left mouse button, it drags my whole application window, not the view window in the editor. Any ideas?
