FATAL ERROR (OpenAL)

after installing the patch 1.02, upon opening the game, it crashes with "Failed! Check your OpenAL installation."

I downloaded and installed the latest OpenAL binary from the official site, but that hasn't fixed it.

Try updating your sound card drivers and see if that helps.

downloaded and installed the latest drivers (Realtek AC'97), installation confirmed in Device Manager. Game is still no go.

Did the game work before installing the patch?

err, sorta. see, i played around with the audio settings before patching, but it caused some crashing upon starting. so, not being able to go back in and undo the setting changes, i uninstalled, then reinstalled, but patched before running it after reinstalling.

Go to My Documents/Penumbra Overture/Episode1/ and delete the settings.cfg file to restore the default settings on next launch.

lol, i figured that out after I uninstalled the the game.

hard to answer. After uninstalling, I immediately reinstalled (but didn't delete the Penumbra folder in the My Documents folder, thinking the config file would be deleted or overwritten in the reinstall) then installed the 1.02 patch. i never had a chance to get to the settings page, since the program wouldn't open.

Uninstalling the game does not delete the settings file so you would still have to do
"Go to My Documents/Penumbra Overture/Episode1/ and delete the settings.cfg file to restore the default settings on next launch."
