Stuck in Northern Prison (Glass Jar full of Acid won't work)

I just got out of the Kitchen area. A monster attacked me and I hid in the corner. Afterwards I used the Glass Jar (that I already had) on the acid barrel. Then I went to the gate where you are supposed to leave the area at and I try to use the acid and it says, "It will do no good." Then I try to use the hammer and chisel and that doesn't work either.

EDIT: I was at the wrong gate never mind.

you're suppoused to pour it out on a rusty old lock.


i hope you found it, because that's the main point of getting that glass jar with acid.
