People need to stop bumping this old thread, but...

Unless I'm fracked up in the head, I think your getting mixed up with .hps files, .map is the actual map. And yes, using decals can easily rack up to 4-5MB, like in my case when I went overboard.

Actually, .map files are text files. Go ahead and try opening it with word pad, notepad++, or whatever text editor you got. You'll see that they are very long and store every single position and state of each object in the level.

The reason why they are so big is because they use the models and textures of every single object, making it much more bigger of a file than the text is worth.
