From all of us, to all of you,
As the year is coming to an end, we here at Frictional Games would like to take a minute to reflect. Four years have past since we first started – four years filled with monsters and terrifying revelations, and we even managed to make a few games. Our latest abomination, Amnesia: The Dark Descent, was released only four months ago and we have been fortunate to receive kind words from both the press as well as our fans.
Earlier this month we were awarded by the popular multimedia news site, IGN, first place in the categorizes: Best of PC 2010 – Coolest Atmosphere and Best of PC 2010 – Best Horror Game. Simply being able to compete with games besting our budget at a hundredfold, is a tremendous feat. Having won, we are humbled and honored.
As the winter solstice is approaching, we feel it is time to take a few days of vacation. This is, after all, when the trolls come out to feed and we will need our strengths to fight them off. Meanwhile, feel free to abuse our hospitality by grabbing a copy, or two, of Amnesia: The Dark Descent and Penumbra Collection at a 50% discount. We will be back on the 3rd of January to clean up the mess.
Also, have a look at the neat improvements we’ve done to our shop.
- Taxes(vat) are now included in the displayed price, no matter what country you are in.
- Your Penumbra Collection-purchase, is no longer limited to one platform. Buy one and play Penumbra on Windows, Mac OS, and Linux.

Amnesia: The Dark Descent
Amnesia: The Dark Descent is a first person horror game with a focus on immersion. It is a game where atmosphere and story comes first. A breeze of fresh air, in a genre otherwise populated by “one-man-army action hero” sagas. In Amnesia you are almost completely defenseless, something we believe not only makes the game a lot scarier, but also gives a vastly different experience.
Enter an interactive nightmare where reality is a fragile concept.
Do you have what it takes to survive?
Today we have released a patch for Amnesia: The Dark Descent. The main reason for the update is to make sure the Radeon X1000 Series of cards work as intended. We have also included a whole bunch of other fixes and changes, check our support page for me specific information.
While at it the tools for making custom stories has also been updated to make use of the changes. So far the tools have spurred interest beyond what we anticipated, if interested to see what's cooking check the forum.Discuss this article in the forum.
Today we have released the tools for Amnesia: The Dark Descent. These are the tools that we used to create the game, anyone interested in game development should take a look.
Using the tools you can create your own "Custom Stories", which can then be shared with other users and be played by using the main menu entry with the same name. You can even create a "Total Conversion" if so wanted, but this would require quite a bit more work and is perhaps not our main intention with the tools.
So check out http://hpl2.frictionalgames.com for information and download. Currently the tools are available for Windows, with Linux and Mac releases coming as soon as possible.
We have provided some basic information on the HPL2 site, but as it is a Wiki, anyone can dig in and help expanding the information, tutorials and so forth. You can also check the Custom Story Forum section for discussions and downloading of any future user creations.
To end it all, we have two new videos to share. One developer walkthrough of the story design in Amnesia and the horrific Russian launch trailer for Amnesia. Enjoy!Discuss this article in the forum.
