Eyyyyy, felt like I wanted to add my rock I made in here. Took a few hours. It was my first Zbrush sculpt (ever), and made some bakes using xNormal to apply to a low poly mesh. There's more to the process, but I'll save the space. For my first, I don't think it's too bad. But that's grounds for improvement, right? Right. =] This was quite a learning experience as well.

Low poly count: 456 Tris

Really good work! It does look a bit more like a metal than rock though.

My attempt on rocking. There are some errors to it (my first rock yay), but each attempt at creating something will provide better results. 788 tris. Took 1,5 hours.

Edit: Critique on brandons rock --

Rocks are often quite random in shape, with rough surfaces. Your rock has quite even surfaces and edges. You can see it formed as two squares shapes on top of each other. I'm not sure how describe it, but it has a lot of "square" shapes in it; as if man-made instead of nature-made.

It was good that you were able to go through the whole workflow though, getting familiar with things is always nice. Don't be upset by me critiquing - I wouldn't want to upset you. Just some tips :]

Yeah, I think I have to darken the diffuse, go easy on edge highlights, and I fixed the spec. I'll have to update the picture soon. =P and I see what you mean acies. There are some flatter rocks out there, but I see your point.

You need to focus on using reference. It needs more deformations, less planes (or less area in your case and more flat planes elsewhere). Not quite so perfect, you need to make it messier as far as how much noise, how much of a pounded surface there is. extrude some areas out, cut into the rock, do less "flat, smooth planes".

Less pieces of rock sticking out everywhere, of course. It just looks... sporadic. It's too... crystal like.

Here's some WIP I've been working on for the past 3 days...

I think that the rough surface would be very hard to make with the model, but you can make a (attention, modeller joke here) really crazy bump Big Grin
I meant normal map. The surface is really hard to make manually, so why not letting the nrm map do the job?

If you insist in not changing it, you could re-texture it as it looked as crystal. I love crystals Big Grin

Amazing ship, dude! With maya I don't make anything well, to be sincere. Do you know that I could make something similar in Blender? I can be your Space-shiper if you want :3

RE: Modeling/Art non-related to Amnesia - Statyk - 12-12-2012

Updated the texture and spec (so it's not as metallic) of the rock I posted a bit back. Any and all feedback are nice. I can't say I'll fix this sculpt, but I will keep it in mind for the next.

I personally still think it looks a little to planar. It's not terrible, but it really reminds me of crystals, I.E.- Quartz.

You did a better job with the texture, perhaps you could add more bump to it and make it look like it has a ton of deformations/ granular/ worn bits. It'll make it look older and more like rock. Right now, to me, it looks too much like plastic.

You could make anything similar in any program. You just need to know how to use the program and you need to have good concepts/ good ideas laid out first. I knew how I wanted this ship to look, so I modeled it from 1 view (not easy). I only had the side view.

On a similar note, Maya's modeling tools, from what I experienced, are better than Blenders. 3DS MAX's are better than both, BUT, if you know how to use Blender really well, and you know all the shortcuts/ what each tool does/ etc., then it's a good tool to use. If you don't know how to use it, keep modeling more simple characters and objects until you get the hang of it.

My model only has 4716 triangles on it. That's relatively low poly for a model like this, and you can totally see that. Now if this were a model from Gran Turismo, the model would be nearly 500,000 triangles.
