Improving on what we have. :3
Well of course, but I mean at some point it's going to look exactly like real life, and it already pretty much does. Where do you go when you reach the look of real life? Is it possible to look better than real life? I don't think so..

Sure it can. Games just alike movies can be highly stylized with fancy effects and what not, real life can not.

Also ''realistic graphics'' are not the only way to go, there are thousands of different art styles that games use, attempting to look real is just one of them.

Alright I see where you're coming from, but the graphics we see normally are based on real life, sure effects can be added that you wouldn't normally see in a real world but they can't really become more 'realistic' per se.

I think where graphics could go in terms of improving, is those textures that when you zoom in on them they become muddy, that kinda thing doesn't happen in a real world. Also there's always making 3D models more defined with more polys.

Yeah, I also realize that not all games go the realistic route, but I'm more talking about the games that do try to look like real life.
