Creating Puzzles - Training. - FlawlessHappiness - 02-07-2014

Hey there.

I'm in the situation right now, that I need to create some puzzles for a game. This is portal 2, but there are still lots of opportunities...

I just can't figure out one.

Do any of you know how to train yourself in creating puzzles?

You might as well be asking someone how they create great music, or a great piece of art. Just do it, start off wherever you feel like it and build it up like how everyone else does it.

Give yourself a basic task like I want someone to click a button to open a door to the end, then add a jumping mechanic to it, then add another thing, then another, then another and so on.

Not sure if your implying what I said is good or bad, but I have this same argument with my sister a lot. She will come and ask the same thing and trying to explain to her for 20 minutes what tips she can use to be better at something doesn't work most of the time.

So I'm just being direct and trying to give the best advice I can of just "Do it!"

Yea, yea, yea, I understand what you mean Rapture. Of course.

Though, I'm not asking "Hey guys. How do I make the best puzzles?".

I'm asking for your personal thoughts when you're going to create a puzzle in your map.
What do you think?
Are you checking some things off, when creating the puzzle. Is it something that just comes to you?

Basically: What are you doing, when you create puzzles? Any methods?

The one with "Create a small puzzle, then expand" is a great one. It works very well in a realistic game.

Personally if i want puzzles i think. And best way to do it in my case is walking cirlce in my room or walking outside. Walking pumps blood better to your brain so it's easier to think. Another thing that raises ideas is listening music, especially classical music.

Good idea.
I think I'll be going for a walk with my yoyo then... in my room...

Or listen music at the same time, like me. I get ideas for my novel that wayCool

Usually at school or the bathroom (yes I know I'm a weird kid) I usually talk to myself either in my mind (School), or as if I'm talking to someone in real life (Bathroom) and then snap! I got some new ideas.
