As Urkle said already HPL2 isn't rewrite from scratch. most parts are just the same as HPL1, the rendering has been upgraded/dated with new features... so far there is no bench mark utility for HPL1/2...

if i may say so, HPL2 just has just gone gold/stable/wathever and it's the engine for Amnesia, so i don't think it will be open sourced anytime soon.

for my first scary game was wolfenstein (the first) then Doom (in both case i was about 10) then Penumbra came!!! the gameplay of penumbra is just great!

KavazovAngel, tbh i don't think that it will be worth making a 64bit version for windows... as the game won't use over than 4 GB ram... in the linux case many ppl don't want to install the 32bit libs ...

i wish someone to make a co-op mode for the game! :p that would increase the game difficulty! Ofc by that i mean more mobs maybe would need to modify the some maps for making new puzzles.
