Game Crashes Compter at profile screen

i have tried to get this demo running on my computer i have used the old version as well as the new 1.0.1 patch version on both linux and windows xp. i meet all the the sytems requirements 2gigs ram nvidia gforce 6600 gt with the latest drivers. the game starts fine but as soon as i get to the part where you create a profile the main menu the screen goes blank and i can still hear sound for a second then the whole computer freezes and i ahve to shut it off. is there anyway to fix this i dont see any reason this should be happening.
