Overture: Stuck in the workshop. Cannot get the string!

What am I missing here? I see the box, but I cannot get the hand to show up. I've stacked boxes up to try and crouch, tried breaking the box with the pickaxe, thrown rocks at it...and called it some dirty names.

Please help me...
