Game Freezes at Profile Selection Screen

Hello, I'm on a Vista 32-bit system with Nvidia GeForce 6150SE graphics

When I start the game, the opening comments run correctly, and I can adjust the gamma when prompted. After the first loading screen, the window shows a still picture of a torch on a wall in the background and asks me to create a profile. However, the game is almost completely frozen at this point, and appears to be running at a rate of .1 fps. It's impossible to do anything, any suggestions?

My graphic drivers are completely updated, I have the latest version of DirectX, I am running the program as administrator, I've tried runing it in compatibility mode for XP SP2. None of these things have worked.
