I don't know if there are any other softwares that are "easier" to use, because very few are supported. You MIGHT be able to use Blender, but personally I find it much more difficult than Maya. Also 3ds Max should work, but only with the beta patch. Otherwise I think you have to use Maya for animations no matter what. Does hitting 6 on the keyboard not do anything? It's a shortcut for one of the buttons above the viewport to enable the faces and textures on them.

When i opened for example the Intelligencer from The Great Work custom story or the Orginal Brute,it was just skeleton.But i pressed 6 and reloaded the model,and it worked. But i cannot open hunter or spider anymore.
I am trying to find way to make Gigatnic spider for my custom story "Penumbra Apocalypse". But i cannot open it`s .dae
