You could update to 1.2 for Amnesia, not that anything specifically has been changed that could help with this.

You could try to download a new driver from ati.com and if that does not help, check the HP site for new drivers. As it works for the other DV6 owner it is probably that he/she uses different drivers or perhaps some setting related to power management or similar as that is what usually controls what graphic chip to use.
