How to make sounds for your Custom Story

Hey Guys!

Elven had (kind of) a request that I’d put out a guide how

to make scary sounds and ambience for your Custom Story. It makes for a nice

touch to the story since we all get a bit tired of hearing 04_amb.ogg

First of all I am sorry but my program is in Swedish, I will

explain everything here in English thou so pics are more to be visual.

Step 1:

Choosing the sound to use.

It might not be easy to decide witch one to use, so I here

is a tip!

What I will do now for this tutorial is to start my playlist

I have for my normal music. Then I press random 10 times, and use that song. If

you are having a hard time to decide this is a fun way to decide

Step 2:

Importing the song into Audacity (Yes I will use Audacity

cause it’s a easy program to use) and choosing a stick to use.

I got the song “Undead” by Hollywood Undead, and I imported

it to Audacity.

Cut out your part of the song with Ctrl+X then delete the

normal song by pressing the “X”

http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/42/tut3eu.jpg/

After that you just past the cut out part by pressing Ctrl+V

(Hard stuff so far Angel )

http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/821/tut2va.jpg/

Step 3:

Edit the Stick

When you have pasted the stick into Audacity, we need to

edit it.

I’ll do some easy steps to show how to make some cool

effects.

First: Reverse the song!

It’s easy to do. Just double-click anywhere to mark the

song, go to effects and press “Reverse”

Next thing to do: Echo!

You go to effects again and press echo. Add the numbers you

want to use, I used 0,3 0,5 for this song but it differs from how messy your

sound is. Delay is how long the program waits before echoing the sound, and

decay is how long it stays echoed before “dying out”.

http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/832/tut4l.jpg/

Next thing to do: Pitch!

Lowering the Pitch will make the stick sound deeper and

“scarier”. How much to lower depends on the Stick. If your song only contains

music I would lower about -25 % but as in my case it’s a higher sung song and I

need to lower the pitch -40 %. Sometimes even more is needed but I feel

satisfied with -40 %.

http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/84/tut5r.jpg/

Next thing to do: Speed!

Change the speed, NOT THE TEMPO. If you change the tempo,

often what happens is that the program creates “holes” between the sound to

make up for tempo-loss and it will sound shitty.

I lowered the speed with -55 % to get a nice sound. How much

you guys should lower is hard to say but between -35 % and -60 % is often best.

Next thing to do: Leveller!

Mark one or 2 spots in the stick that you think sound

“Scary” now, cause we’re gonna amplify them Big Grin

http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/199/tut7a.jpg/

When you have chosen you’re part of the stick, go to effects

and use “Leveller”, the chose “Heaviest” or “Heavier” (I think they are called,

furthest down anyhow. As said mine is in Swedish).

http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/695/tut8w.jpg/

Then you’re part is greatly enhanced and will sound more

“Loud and Scary" Rolleyes

http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/842/tut9.jpg/

Next thing to do: Fade out!

Yes we’re gonna pick 1 or 2 or maybe 3 part to “Fade out” so

it becomes a small gap in the sound but without making it sound weird. Like

this:

http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/153/tut10q.jpg/

http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/831/tut11b.jpg/

Fade out is in the Effect menu also Smile Remember to also make

the very last second of your sound Faded out if you don’t want to loop it.

Step 4:

Adding other sounds

You can add other sound to make your original stick more

effective. I am gonna add 4 sound to my stick, 3 of them you can find in the

Amnesia folder (just to make it easy to relate) and one is gonna be a sound of

me talking. The sound of me talking is gonna be edited ofc (I am not gonna go

through that step by step. If someone request that I might do it later.)

The sound will be: lurker_hit_wood3.ogg , sanity_flick2.ogg

and scare_baby_cry2.ogg

Added as follows:

http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/220/tut13h.jpg/

http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/829/tut14z.jpg/

After that I add my own sound effect.

And then the scary sound is done!

Export the sound as a .ogg (You might need to download a

addon to make Audacity be able to do it, else you can export as a mp3 and then

convert if you feel like.) Always save a .aup file so you can play with it

later. That’s all hope you like the tutorial!

Cheers

Mind posting the edited Undead song?

I would love to hear it all screwed up, since I love the original song Big Grin

In the tut he said he used the song Undead by Hollywood Undead to make his sound.

I just wanted him to upload the edited version that he made for Amnesia.

It's furthest down in the first post Smile but here is the link : http://www.gamefront.com/files/20757868/tutstick.ogg

@MegaScience

No problem at all Smile Just take a part that is not to much high notes and it will work nice. I made a sound earlier with The Lonley Island song "The Creep" so it's not impossible Smile
