Thief 2014

So this game just came out today. Any of you guys played it yet? I haven't made the decision whether I will or not yet because it has a huge number of negative reviews, but Totalbiscuits video on it made it seem pretty good. Here it is if you're wondering: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xJS1yCSKlhs

I was never a huge fan of the Thief series, I got thief gold but I never really understood it, it felt way too clunky to even be a good stealth experience. I liked deadly shadows a lot actually which is strange because Thief lovers HATED that game, but to me it seemed like it actually did a good job.

What do you guys think of Thief 2014?

I've got it preloaded on my Steam. I don't get it till tomorrow. After about 30 mins to 1 hour in, I'll give my verdict.

Hopefully it was worth it. In the least, I have some more weps in TF2 ;3

I watched TotalBiscut's video the moment it came out, and judging by how he's described the game it seems like something I'll enjoy quite a lot. Although the fact that many reviewers called out on the story worries me since that is a part of games I care quite a bit about.

I'll get the game today, and share my thoughts on it later.

Indeed. I find myself playing story based games more often.
I was really looking forward for this but now i don't know. Maybe later when it drops the price. It's hard to judge since i haven't tried it yet. Better wait for other opinions.

alright I'll look forward to your comments. Everyone seems to be saying the mechanics are good so maybe it'll be worth it even without a good story

RE: Thief 2014

They've removed a large part of what makes the Thief franchise, that is: the factions, Garret's backstory (which was interwoven with the factions), supernatural elements and the exceptional level design to name the major changes. Sure it might be a mechanically good game (though I've heard mixed opinions on that as well) but they have absolutely no respect for the franchise, so little in fact that they didn't even care about artistic cohession which is crucial (absolutely crucial) when developing sequels, even more so when rebooting a franchise.

But then, Square Enix is on a spree to destory every beloved, iconic franchises from days past. Through shitty reboots. Only exception is Deus Ex: HR.

So far they've completely ruined Tomb Raider (even if there's wasn't much more to be ruined but the new one was incredibly bad nonetheless), Hitman and now Thief. The common thread here is that for each instance they have stripped the reboot of all that the game was about and it makes me sad, in my head and in my heart. I'm worried about what other franchises they are going to take a big shit on.

RE: Thief 2014

I've posted here before but I'll add this reminder.

Folks who prefer the old Thief 1 & 2 style game-play but want an upgrade to a more modern
engine should check out The Dark Mod

http://www.thedarkmod.com

http://www.moddb.com/mods/the-dark-mod

Since 2.0 this is now a free "standalone game" (Doom 3 is no longer required).

RE: Thief 2014

That... almost seems like advertising on this thread.. since we are talking about Thief 2014, not necessarily that. Won't complain though, I'll let someone else deal with it :3

I won't lie, I quite like it so far, I just think for a game about espionage and stealth in an Assassins Creed sort of time would be more fast paced, or that could just be me going slowly trying to find everything. I dislike the first person view at times though, I feel less mobile and more bound to a linear game with it.

Although I like it thus far, I am unsure whether I will play it again after completion.

RE: Thief 2014

I'll be getting my hands dirty with it next week. Considering it's been 10 years since the last one I'm not expecting it to feel too familiar to the previous games.

As long as there's some proper stealth mechanics, I'm pretty sure I'll enjoy my time.

RE: Thief 2014

I feel like they do have respect to the Thief franchise, when some early videos came out and got a ton of criticism, Eidos changed everything that made people angry and introduced a lot of options so the game is customizable to what you like.
