In my opinion, it does get "better". There a lots of these "false alarm" hallucinations at the beginning of the game, but they don't occur as often in later chapters of the game. You will be confronte...

If you enjoy the experience of being chased and not being able to fight back, you could try the Clock Tower series or Haunting Ground. Unfortunately, those games are nowhere near as scary as Amnesia.
